Norma Ausman

Chippewa County 4-H Volunteer

For 70 years, Norma exemplified true citizenship and community leadership in Chippewa County. A devoted member of the Homemakers and a 4-H project leader in food, canning, and gardening from 1965 to 2017, she empowered generations of youth and families to learn, lead, and serve. Norma’s teaching went beyond skills—she instilled values of responsibility, pride, and self-reliance, guiding young people to become confident, capable citizens. As superintendent for foods and canning and assistant for speaking, demonstration, drama, and music contests at the Northern Wisconsin State Fair, she combined intelligence, heart, and hands-on mentoring that inspired all around her.

Her civic contributions extended far beyond 4-H. She helped organize trips to Washington, D.C., served as a poll worker for 50 years, led her church circle into her 80s, promoted local farmers through the Dairy Recipe Contest, and earned the Sunshine Award for teaching cooking and canning. Her home and heart were always open to family, neighbors, and youth, creating a legacy of care, mentorship, and community connection.

Even in her final days, her love for teaching and family shone brightly. When her granddaughter Emily baked bread for the Northern Wisconsin State Fair, Norma, though grieving her husband of 69 years, joined her in the kitchen. A week later, she passed, having shared one last moment of guidance, laughter, and love as Emily proudly showed her the Grand Champion Ribbon—a lasting testament to Norma’s life of service, family devotion, and enduring impact.
