Youth Engaged in Leadership and Learning Curriculum

Youth Engaged in Leadership and Learning is a youth leadership curriculum that includes lessons and activities co-developed by youth and adult partners that aim to promote lasting social change in communities. This resource includes content on the following topics, which are relevant to civic engagement: active listening, teamwork, speaking and presenting, facilitation, and leadership.

Activities require adult or youth leader facilitation.

Audience: Grades 9-12

Recommendation

The strengths of this resource are:

  • activities are engaging, involving group work and relationship-building
  • curriculum emphasizes different, individualized leadership styles
  • lesson plans focused on identity
  • facilitation tools and tips for educators
  • support for youth community service projects
  • lessons are complete, well-tested, easy to understand, and scaffolded
  • includes a range of activities to appeal to a range of needs

Users should note that:

  • some resources may not be culturally relevant
  • some activities require greater vulnerability from youth and prior relationship-building
  • resource has not been updated recently for accessibility and sources
  • lessons can be lengthy and topics are broad

The resource could be adapted by:

  • making the content available in other formats and languages
  • modifying the content into shorter lesson plans to engage students
  • finding more recent resources
