The Youth Empowerment Solutions Curriculum (Multicultural Version) is a curriculum that supports community-level violence prevention by empowering youth to work with adults to make positive changes. Topics include leadership development, community learning and visioning, partnering with adults, and action planning.

Activities require adult or youth leader facilitation.

Audience: Grades 6-12

Recommendation

The strengths of this resource are:

  • culturally relevant instruction
  • focus on community assets, challenges, and community assessment
  • fun, enjoyable, relationship-building experience
  • easy to skim and modify for instructors
  • relevant to groups focused on action planning

Users should note that:

  • more of a focus on group rather than individual projects, which may not be relevant to all
  • less of a specific emphasis on governance
  • less relevant to rural issues

The resource could be adapted by:

  • adjusting projects to fit better with Youth in Governance programming
  • weave in connections to local governance (including past successful projects)

We recommend the following parts of this resource for Youth in Governance programming:

  • Sessions 3.1 – 3.4
  • Session 4.1
