Llamas & Alpacas Project Curriculum

Youth in the Llamas & Alpacas project explore the species at many levels, from beginners to advanced and beyond.

  • Lamas, Level 1—Youth will learn where lamas originated as well as basic information about lama care, grooming, building trust, training, and much more.
  • Lamas, Level 2—Youth learn about lama registration papers, lama communication, differences between llamas and alpacas, lama feed, lama training, lama showmanship, and using lama fleece.
  • Lamas, Level 3—Youth will learn about lama social behavior, showing and judging, fiber types, body condition scoring, conditions that stress lamas, hiking with or driving a lama, guard lamas, careers that include lamas, and more.
  • Llamas & Alpacas Helper’s Guide—This guide from Indiana 4-H covers project information for the Llamas and Alpacas curriculum. This resource will help you become familiar with the material in the youth activity guides and the Helper’s Guide, support your 4-H member in setting goals and completing each achievement program, and help your 4-H members get to know themselves, including strengths and weaknesses.
