Pesobic Pathfinders 4-H Club President Hope Elrath and club leader Ann Jaroski recently went live on the radio show Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba, joined by Cedar Crest Marketing Manager Shannon Simon, to talk about winning the Cedar Crest Ice Cream 4-H Flavor Creation Contest.
A panel of ice cream experts chose the Pesobic Pathfinders’ entry, Hold Your Horses, as the top flavor. In July, Cedar Crest will feature the flavor in ice cream shops and parlors across Wisconsin. The club also won an ice cream party and $500 from Cedar Crest.
The Pesobic Pathfinders are no strangers to this contest. They also won in 2024 with their flavor, Paul Bunyan.
This time, during club meetings, members went hands-on in ice cream flavor making by experimenting with adding different mix-ins to Cedar Crest vanilla ice cream. They sampled their creations to determine their favorite combinations.
They created Hold Your Horses, an espresso ice cream with chocolate-covered toffee pieces and ribbons of caramel.
Club members chose a name that connects to their rural backgrounds in Lincoln County, where the club is based, with many owning horses and living on farms. They also purposely chose a name that references how espresso makes you “get up and go,” Jaroski said.
With this rural reference in a dairy product, Jaroski expressed that they wanted to make “something that Wisconsinites would take pride in ordering.”
“Hopefully the interview piqued the interest of anyone listening who didn’t know much about 4-H,” Elrath said. She shared that 4-H is a “beautiful program” that has helped her connect with the community, where members can talk about their unique 4-H experiences and the impact.
The Cedar Crest 4-H Ice Cream Flavor Creation Contest is an example of a way that 4-H members can show what they create, and also speak with others to share their experiences of how 4-H helps them grow.
