Bruemmer Park Zoo, a Kewaunee County park, had an issue with rain water pooling in front of one of their animal enclosures. Dave Myers, Kewaunee County promotions and recreation director, reached out the Kewaunee County 4-H to see if our organization would like to help with the implementation and planting of a rain garden.
With the help of Nancy Lamack, Kewaunee County Garden Club member, they hosted a community listening session on the benefits of rain gardens and then helped plant donated native plants at Bruemmer Park. With the Parks department already having dug out the rain garden and setting up the fence, we used our muscles to dig and plant. We learned about placement of native plants in rain gardens and which ones are most beneficial for water runoff.
Once the garden fills in more, Kewaunee County 4-H members will design educational signs to be posted around the rain garden.
