Bobcat Buddies: A Journey of Growth and Connection

As we approach the end of 2024, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the impactful projects that embody the spirit of 4-H. This month, we shine a spotlight on our Florence County Bobcat Buddies Youth Mentorship Program, a project that brings hope and joy to both our high school mentors and the elementary students they support.

This year, eleven dedicated high school students from the 4-H TORPEDO (Together Our Responsibility Publicly Embraces Dedication and Opportunity) club have been paired with elementary school students who are in need of positive role models. Each week, these mentors meet with their buddies to provide a listening ear, engage in fun games, create crafts, and assist with schoolwork when needed.

For our TORPEDO members, this program is not just about mentorship; it’s an invaluable opportunity to develop their leadership skills and make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life. The impact has been profound. We’ve observed significant improvements in the elementary students’ attitudes toward school, behavior, social skills, and overall self-esteem and confidence.

A Successful Second Year

As we celebrate the second year of the Bobcat Buddies program, we are thrilled to report its success. The elementary students eagerly count down the days each week, excited to spend time with their mentors. This enthusiasm is a testament to the positive relationships being built and the hope being fostered within our community. Looking ahead as we move into the new year, we encourage all 4-H members to continue to “make the best better”. Whether through mentorship, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, every effort counts in making a difference.
