What is it all about?

Youth will explore various folk arts, learn traditional techniques, and understand their cultural significance. This project will help youth develop artistic skills, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for the rich heritage of folk arts.

Grow in Your Project

Beginner

  • Learn about the history and significance of one or two types of folk art
  • Create a simple art piece in the style of that folk art
  • Attend a reenactor’s camp or cultural festival to learn more about folk arts from another time or place

Intermediate

  • Explore a more advanced folk art technique, such as batik, embroidery, or wood carving
  • Develop your awareness of appreciation vs. appropriation
  • Create one or more projects based on the type of folk art you explored

Advanced

  • Practice an advanced folk art technique
  • Adapt a folk art technique to create a project that’s all your own
  • Explore new or advanced folk art techniques, such as intricate beadwork, advanced weaving, or metalworking
