On July 20th, 125 high school students, college students and adult professionals representing almost 40 organizations from 13 counties across Wisconsin gathered at Madison College to attend the seventh annual Wisconsin Restorative Justice Summit.
Keynote speaker, dancer and educator Mark Denning shared the legacy of the American Indian Movement and the troubled history of boarding schools, including in the City of Milwaukee where he spent his childhood. Mark is a member of the Oneida and Menominee Nations, a dancer, educator and traditional lacrosse practitioner.
The Summit featured 14 workshops led by young people and adults from rural, urban and tribal communities. Presenters included Marquette County Teen Court, MENTOR Greater Milwaukee, Madison Area Technical College, YWCA Madison, Beloved Healing, Shana Speaks Life and an interactive traditional lacrosse game led by the keynote.
Thanks to the Wisconsin Restorative Justice Summit Planning Team, the UW-Madison, Division of Extension’s Positive Youth Development and Human Development and Relationships Institutes, Madison College and all staff, volunteers and speakers that gave their time to make this event a success.
