Dear 4-H participants and volunteers,
We hope that this correspondence finds you healthy and safe. Over the course of the past week, the guidance around maintaining social distance to reduce spread of Covid-19 has changed several times. We are following the guidance of public health authorities and UW-Madison about how long we might expect to respond to it. Based on the current information, UW-Madison has decided to suspend all face-to-face classes and activities through the first week in May. This means that 4-H face-to-face gatherings of all kinds are suspended until at least May 3rd. Please note that all Extension staff, as University employees, are required to work remotely and lack access to their offices. Should you need to reach us, please use email.
We are aware that there are many questions related to animal purchases, weigh-in and tagging activities, and fairs. UW-Madison Livestock specialists will be providing separate guidance to Extension and our partners. Many fairs and auctions are also rearranging their plans in response to this pandemic.
It is important to emotional health that keeping our distance does not cause isolation. Experts remind us of the need to exercise, practice mindfulness to reduce stress, stay in touch with others and find ways to support community members during this time. Extension educators are creating content including information for volunteers, activities to keep young people engaged at home, including support for 4-H meetings on the web. Stay tuned for more information on these
Extension staff are working hard to strengthen and re-imagine programming; this is something that we typically do not have time to do. At this point, and understanding that things may change, we are planning toward the centennial Youth Conference in June and cannot wait to welcome young people to campus and reconnect!
As we learn more and develop educational opportunities, we will share it in emails, on our website (here) and through our Facebook page.
